You can find the Islands of Japan at the intersection of coordinate axes of 135E and the 35N.

The Akashi City Observatory at this intersection is the standard for Japan Standard Time (JST=UTC+9). It has a time difference of just 12 hours from Brasilia Standard Time (BRT=UTC-3). The antipodal point, that is, the intersection of 45W and 35S, exists off the coast of Porto Alegre.

Akashi has been a major shipping hub since ancient times, and many nikkei people who immigrated to Brazil set departed from Porto Kobe, which is adjacent to Akashi. The building where the Japanese waiting for departure were staying was built on a hill overlooking Porto Kobe, and now the headquarters of the Associação Nipo-Brasileira is located.

Origin myths tell us that the Islands of Japan were born from Awaji Island, on the opposite bank of Akashi. According to historical records, the political centre of Japan had emerged in Nara by the 6th century, after which the capital was built in Kyoto in the 8th century. Kyoto had been the capital city until it moved to Tokyo in the 19th century. It is still a cultural centre.
